WHY CANCER RESEARCH?
I was torn between Cancer Care and Cancer Research both large Charities I know but on this occasion I have chosen the future and not the present. If you and I can help stop the misery that this awful disease could cause to our children, grandchildren, friends and colleagues alike then I reckon we've achieved something.
What will your donations fund now?
Diagnosis (looking for early cancer)
Developing reliable blood tests looking for small molecules/chemicals produced by common cancers eg breast and prostate cancer, in tiny amounts (Proteomics)
Developing cheap and convenient imaging that combines chemicals and xrays/magnetism and computer software (Virtual CT scan/Nuclear magnetic resonance).
Treatment of Cancer
Chemically choking the blood supply of cancer tumours.
Chemically blocking normal hormones that allow cancers to grow.
Teaching the immune system (normally fights infection) to see and kill cancer cells at an early stage.
Stopping the cancer cells from dividing and multiplying.
Keeping an eye on cancer patients after theyve been treated
Blood tests to look for tell-tale chemicals in tiny quantities which might suggest the cancer is returning.
Looking at the genes of the mother/father/brothers/sisters of the cancer patient for abnormalities that might make them more likely to develop cancer themselves.
